Newark's ongoing efforts to reduce violence was one reason it was the peace summit's venue. Hosted by U.S. Senator from New Jersey, Cory A. Booker, then Mayor of Newark, the summit explored non-violent methods for conflict resolution and how these methods have been put into practice throughout history and around the world, and how they can be applied in cities like Newark and other communities that have been impacted by rampant violence.
